about

We Are Light Part II”, the follow-up to last year’s LP ‘We Are Light’, continues MUDDYLOOP’s journey into their 80s and 90s fan-boy soundscape. As ever, the mode is big hair, big shoulder pads, and big ol’ tunes that put a smile on the face and a pull a tug on the heart.
Like all good follow-ups, the formula stays close to the original blueprint. So, it’s more analogue synthesizers, drum machine beats and funky licks crafted with a fresh zing of modern pop sprinklings and MUDDYLOOP’s endearing oddball-ness.

Marvin Ambrosius and Lucy Lawrence add their powerful and distinctly un-robot-like vocals to the mixed bag of sweeties the album dishes out. From love ballads (the sublimely stripped-down “In the Morning” and power-jam “Anymore”), pulsating electro pop (the Rene & Angela meets Dirty Mind feel of “No Choice”), synth grooves (the effervescent “I Got You”) to dance-flavoured numbers (hand-in-the-air “Musique Takes Over”), “We Are Light Part II” is full of understated iced gems, designed to have you singing along by the second chorus, but never too saccharine for the pop palate.

Case in point is the Lucy-led “Hooked”. A glorious pop monster where Chic-meets-synths and Pettibone-era Madonna vibes combine gloriously. On the same high is album starter “Simple Thoughts” with its clever Cameo sample cut providing the hook while Marvin takes lead duties, even delivering a Pet Shop Boys-inspired rap comprised entirely of song titles. Fun. Another Marvin solo-song “Crossing Streams” (yes – the reference is Ghostbusters) is a pared-back introspective number, like something a young Prince would knock up in his purple basement. Ending it all is the retrospective misty-eyed “So Crazy” with a b-part outro a la Purple Rain that is longer than the song itself and get you all goosebumpy and warm-tingly.

With “We Are Light Part II”, MUDDYLOOP once again give us more of their joyful, playful, heart-felt sentimentality, a rare bright light of an album that throws no shade.
